Position Overview:
The HSE Superintendent – Operations & Training is responsible for leading operational safety performance and managing HSE training strategies across the site. This role ensures compliance with applicable HSE regulations, fosters a strong safety culture, and guarantees that high-risk activities are effectively controlled through proactive risk management and targeted training. It further supports visible safety leadership, field engagement, and competency development at all organizational levels to drive continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities :
- Lead and manage the implementation of the HSE management system across all mining activities, including drill and blast, load and haul, crushing, and equipment maintenance.
- Supervise HSE coordinators and teams to ensure compliance with client, and company policies, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
- Conduct regular safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments to identify hazards and ensure that control measures are effectively implemented.
- Review and investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses, ensuring accurate reporting, root cause analysis, and implementation of corrective actions.
- Develop and deliver HSE training programs, inductions, and toolbox talks to enhance employee awareness and adherence to safety protocols.
- Monitor and report on key HSE performance indicators (KPIs) to the HSE Manager, recommending improvements where necessary.
- Provide support in the preparation and maintenance of HSE documentation, reports, and compliance records for regulatory purposes.
- Ensure that all relevant permits and licenses are obtained and maintained for site activities, ensuring compliance with corporate, client and national regulations.
- Actively participate in safety meetings, HSE committees, and daily briefings to promote a safety-first culture across the workforce.
- Coordinate emergency response planning and drills to ensure preparedness in the event of a workplace emergency.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including operations, maintenance, and contractors, to promote safe work practices and resolve HSE concerns.
- Stay current with HSE legislation, industry trends, and best practices, providing recommendations for improvements.
- Promote the company's safety culture through leadership, communication, and engagement at all levels of the organization.
Qualifications and Experience :
- Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Minimum of 8 years’ experience in HSE roles, including 3+ years in HSE operations management within the mining or heavy industry sector..
- Strong understanding of health, safety, and environmental regulations, specifically within the mining industry.
- Demonstrated experience in managing HSE programs for diverse activities such as drilling, blasting, load and haul, crushing, and equipment maintenance.
- Proven track record of driving safety performance improvement and incident reduction.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence all levels of the organization.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to conduct risk assessments and incident investigations.
- Certification in HSE or safety management (e.g., IOSH, NEBOSH, OSHA, or similar) is highly desirable.
- Certified trainer or experience in adult learning, competency-based training, or instructional design.
- Valid driver’s license and the ability to work in a remote mining environment.
