Electrical & PLC Engineer – Tunneling
As part of the CWA (Civil Works Alliance) we will support the building for Sizewell C. Sizewell C will be a 3.2-gigawatt power station generating low-carbon electricity for around 6 million homes and will play a key role in our energy future, supplying reliable, clean electricity for at least 60 years.
The Civil Works Alliance is seeking an experienced Electrical & PLC Engineer to support underground and tunneling works during the Sizewell C construction phase. Based at Orwell Logistics Park, with regular site visits, this role will provide vital electrical engineering expertise across the marine and tunnel workstreams, helping to deliver safe, reliable and high-performing site infrastructure.
What You Will Do
- Support the design, implementation and technical oversight of electrical systems for tunneling and marine works.
- Lead and coordinate electrical aspects of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) establishment, including power supplies, control panels and auxiliary systems.
- Develop electrical power requirements and distribution arrangements for slurry, EPB or dual-mode TBMs.
- Assess and plan power requirements for TBMs, conveyors and auxiliary equipment, including grout plants, gantry cranes, chiller plants, ventilation and water treatment plants.
- Produce and review technical drawings, specifications, calculations, simulations and engineering documentation.
- Design, develop and maintain robust testing regimes for on-site electrical systems.
- Provide technical support through installation, commissioning, fault-finding and equipment breakdown resolution.
- Support the development of HV/LV cabling schemes, transformers, grids and power supply units.
- Prepare risk assessments, method statements and permit applications.
- Review subcontractor designs and implementation plans, ensuring alignment with project requirements.
- Work collaboratively with project teams and stakeholders to coordinate electrical works safely and effectively.
- Champion high standards of health, safety, wellbeing, environmental performance, quality and continuous improvement.
What We Are Looking For
- A degree, or equivalent qualification, in Electrical or Electronic Engineering.
- An ECS Card and 17th or 18th Edition qualification.
- Demonstrable experience in a comparable electrical engineering role within major construction, infrastructure or tunneling environments.
- Essential experience working with TBMs, including their electrical establishment, power distribution and auxiliary systems.
- Strong knowledge of electrical systems, power distribution, control systems and electrical fault-finding.
- Experience designing and troubleshooting electrical systems, with the ability to make sound technical decisions in a live project environment.
- Proven project and process management capability, with a methodical and collaborative approach.
- The ability to produce clear technical documentation, including drawings, specifications and testing plans.
- A commitment to working safely, following relevant standards and regulations, positively and influencing others to own the HSE agenda.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams, subcontractors and alliance partners.
The following would be advantageous:
- PLC programming and maintenance experience.
- AutoCAD experience.
- Experience designing electrical schematics and control panel layouts.
- Experience installing and commissioning motors, sensors and actuators.
- Nuclear industry or nuclear license condition awareness.
- Experience within joint ventures, alliances or major UK construction projects.
