TBM & Tunnelling Roles - Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project – Australia

The Project

A consortium of John Holland, Bouygues Construction, Arcadis Australia, Jacobs and Ventia has been selected to deliver South Australia’s largest-ever road infrastructure project. In partnership with the South Australian Government, this consortium forms the Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Alliance.

The Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Alliance will deliver the final 10.5km section of the North–South Corridor, completing a continuous 78km, non-stop, traffic light-free motorway and creating a lasting legacy for the community and people of Adelaide.

The T2D Project involves the construction of two major tunnels (Northern and Southern Tunnels) connected by an open motorway, with a combined tunnel length of 10.5km, scheduled to open to traffic in 2031. The works also include extensive surface infrastructure, road and bridge construction, services buildings, and complex mechanical, electrical, and tunnelling systems.

The Alliance is committed to providing opportunities for local people, Aboriginal workers, apprentices, trainees, and long-term job seekers, while also drawing on international tunnelling expertise where experience is highly transferable to the scale and complexity of this project.

The Opportunity

The Tunnelling Team is seeking Expressions of Interest from experienced TBM and tunnelling professionals to support the safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery of tunnel construction across the T2D Project.

These roles will contribute to TBM operations, underground construction, engineering coordination, and leadership across a complex, multi-year major infrastructure program.

Roles of Interest

EOIs are invited from candidates with experience aligned to the following positions:

  • Project Manager – Tunnel

  • Senior Project Engineer – Tunnel (TBM focus)

  • Project Engineer – Tunnel

  • Shift Engineer – Tunnel / TBM Operations

Appointments will be aligned to project requirements and individual experience.

Scope of Works

Depending on role and seniority, responsibilities may include:

  • Leadership and delivery of tunnel and TBM construction packages

  • Oversight of TBM operations, including EPB TBM performance, ring building, alignment, and logistics

  • Management of subcontractors, resources, and shift-based tunnelling activities

  • Preparation and implementation of construction documentation (method statements, ITPs, SWMS)

  • Monitoring and reporting on progress, risk, cost, and performance

  • Interface management across design, construction, logistics, and systems teams

  • Strong commitment to safety leadership, environmental management, and compliance

Roles will work closely with construction management, engineering teams, subcontractors, and stakeholders to ensure seamless delivery of tunnel works within the broader T2D program .

Candidate Profile

We are interested in professionals who demonstrate:

  • Experience on major tunnelling or underground infrastructure projects

  • Experience working with Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBMs is highly regarded
  • Strong technical capability in TBM operations and tunnelling methodologies

  • Proven leadership, site coordination, and decision-making skills

  • A commitment to zero-harm safety culture and environmental compliance

  • Ability to work in high-risk, high-complexity construction environments

  • Experience in Alliance or PPP delivery models (desirable)

Shift-based roles may require flexibility to work day/night rosters and involvement in specialised activities such as hyperbaric works, subject to role requirements.

International Experience

Given the scale, systems, and delivery model of the T2D Project, this Expression of Interest will be of particular relevance to professionals with UK-based tunnelling and major infrastructure experience who are open to working internationally or relocating to Australia. Experience gained on comparable projects is considered highly transferable.

All appointments will be subject to project needs, local compliance requirements, and relevant work rights.
