The Australian Antarctic Infrastructure Renewal Alliance is seeking a skilled QHSE Advisor for the first stage of a multi-decade pipeline of work to renew and expand Australian infrastructure in Antarctica. Initial work includes an expedition for the Antarctic summer season for 2026/2027, building new water production facilities, a utility building with power and workshop facilities, and major structural works.Living and working in Antarctic is a challenging but extremely rewarding opportunity. Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
Accountabilities
- Ensure compliance with WHS legislation, regulations, and AIR safety policies.
- Maintain and improve the QHSE management system in alignment with ISO 45001 standards.
- Promote and embed a strong safety culture across all project activities.
- Ensure accurate and timely reporting of incidents, hazards, and regulatory notifications.
- Oversee contractor and subcontractor safety management and compliance.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives in health, safety, and environmental performance.
- Contribute to risk management strategies for high-risk activities and remote operations.
- Ensure quality assurance processes are integrated into project delivery.
Responsibilities
- Provide expert advice on WHS compliance, risk management, and safety systems.
- Conduct incident investigations using ICAM methodology and implement corrective actions.
- Develop, review, and verify SWMS and WHS Management Plans for all project activities.
- Facilitate toolbox talks, safety interactions, and coaching sessions with site teams.
- Monitor and audit contractor and subcontractor compliance with AIR safety requirements.
- Maintain accurate records in safety management systems (Cority, 3-D Safety, BYCA).
- Prepare and submit regulatory notifications and internal reports as required.
- Assist with internal audits and support external certification audits.
- Deliver training and awareness sessions on high-risk activities and WHS obligations.
- Participate in risk assessments for hazardous tasks and remote operations.
- Collaborate with project managers to integrate QHSE requirements into planning and execution.
- Coordinate and conduct baseline environmental monitoring during construction activities at Davis Station, including dust, noise, surface disturbance, potential contaminants, and ecological indicators, to ensure compliance with Antarctic environmental requirements and support adaptive environmental management.
- Perform regular site environmental inspections and ongoing monitoring of key parameters such as dust, water quality, noise, flora and fauna, and waste management.
- Maintain accurate records and compliance documentation, including checklists, monitoring data, and evidence of adherence to environmental standards.
- Prepare and submit reports, including:
- Monthly environmental performance reports
- Incident and non-conformance reports
- Regulatory submissions and reports for Alliance management
- Support internal and external audits by providing documentation and assisting with audit processes.
Knowledge and Experience:
Essential:
- Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety.
- White Card (CPCWHS1001 – Prepare to work safely in the construction industry).
- 3–5 years’ experience in Health & Safety within the construction industry.
Highly Desirable:
- Degree or Diploma in WHS.
- Incident Investigation Training (ICAM).
- High-risk activity training and audit systems exposure.
- Strong understanding of WHS Act & Regulations and duty holder obligations (PCBU, Officers, Workers).
- Experience with safety management systems (Cority, 3-D Safety, BYCA).
- First Aid & CPR (HLTAID011 / HLTAID009).
- Confined Space Awareness, Working at Heights, Hazardous Substances & Asbestos Awareness.
- Plant & Traffic Management, Permit to Work & Isolation Systems.
Desirable:
- Temporary works awareness.
- Lifting operations & crane safety.
- Familiarity with ISO 45001 WHS Management Systems.

Requirements
- Successful completion of the selection process: Includes written application, interviews, technical assessments, medical and psychological screening, reference checks and national police check.
- Valid Passport - The expiry date of the passport (and any relevant visa) must be at least 6 months beyond the planned end date of the expedition
- Living Conditions: While Davis Station offers private bedrooms and comfortable facilities, candidates must be prepared to share and contribute to communal living spaces (including dining and bathrooms), cleaning and other responsibilities. Personal freedoms of movement may also be limited at times due to physical isolation and occasional harsh weather.
- Support Provided: Pre-departure training, resilience and mental health preparation, and ongoing support for expeditioners and their families throughout deployment
