Project
Sizewell C (SZC) is at the heart of the UK’s clean energy revolution. This ground-breaking nuclear power plant project in Suffolk will play a vital role in delivering a sustainable future. Backed by EDF and the UK Government, Sizewell C is a once-in-a-generation project with significant opportunities to innovate, grow, and deliver excellence.
We are responsible for a range of specialist ground engineering works as part of the Geotechnical Subcontract Alliance (GSA), supporting the delivery of major ground engineering and civil works for the project.
Position
The Environmental Manager will lead environmental management activities across the Sizewell C project, ensuring compliance with legal, contractual, and client requirements throughout all construction phases.
The role will be responsible for developing and implementing environmental strategies, managing environmental risks and performance, supporting sustainable construction practices, and driving continual improvement. The position will also act as a key point of contact for the Client, regulators, statutory bodies, and other external stakeholders on environmental matters.
Main Responsibilities
Environmental Management System & Compliance
- Lead the development, implementation, and monitoring of the project Environmental Management System (EMS) in line with ISO 14001 and client requirements.
- Ensure contractual, DCO, permit, licence, and other environmental obligations are identified, understood, and met.
- Oversee environmental risk identification, assessment, and implementation of effective control measures.
- Ensure environmental requirements are embedded throughout project planning and construction activities.
Technical Advice & Incident Management
- Provide technical advice and guidance on ecology, water management, land use, waste, materials, noise, air quality, and carbon.
- Lead environmental incident investigations, reporting, corrective actions, and follow-up activities.
- Provide advice to project teams and subcontractors on environmental risks and control measures.
- Support the resolution of environmental issues and ensure appropriate corrective actions are implemented.
Stakeholder Engagement & Communication
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with regulators, statutory bodies, local authorities, and other environmental stakeholders.
- Represent the project at environmental forums, client meetings, audits, and regulatory inspections.
- Act as a key point of contact for environmental matters with the Client and external stakeholders.
- Support bid submissions, technical queries, and stakeholder engagement activities.
- Support the coordination of technical engineers and draftspersons within the UK.
Supply Chain & Subcontractor Oversight
- Lead engagement with subcontractors and supply chain partners to ensure environmental compliance and best practice.
- Monitor environmental performance across subcontractor interfaces and project scopes.
- Oversee and coordinate third-party environmental surveys, assessments, and specialist consultancy input.
- Ensure environmental requirements are communicated effectively throughout the supply chain.
Monitoring, Reporting & Improvement
- Define and monitor environmental performance indicators and project objectives.
- Produce accurate monthly and quarterly environmental reports for senior leadership and the Client.
- Develop and implement project-specific environmental improvement plans aligned with biodiversity, sustainability, and carbon reduction commitments.
- Monitor environmental performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Capture, share, and embed lessons learned and environmental best practice across the project.
Training, Awareness & Team Support
- Lead environmental training, briefings, and awareness sessions for project and subcontractor teams.
- Ensure environmental controls are incorporated into method statements, permit systems, inspection programmes, and audit processes.
- Conduct regular site visits to verify compliance and environmental performance.
- Coach and support operational teams in the effective implementation of environmental controls.
- Promote strong environmental awareness and accountability across the project.
Candidate Profile
Education & Experience
- Degree-level qualification in Environmental Management or a related discipline.
- ISO 14001 Auditor qualification or equivalent.
- Significant experience in environmental management within major infrastructure, construction, or engineering projects.
- In-depth knowledge of UK environmental legislation and regulatory requirements.
- Proven experience managing environmental performance on large-scale or complex projects.
- Experience engaging with clients, regulators, statutory bodies, and other external stakeholders.
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of Environmental Management Systems and ISO 14001 requirements.
- Experience managing environmental risks, incidents, audits, and compliance activities.
- Knowledge across environmental disciplines including ecology, water, waste, materials, noise, air quality, biodiversity, and carbon.
- Strong understanding of environmental monitoring, reporting, and improvement processes.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear and accurate reports under pressure.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Ability to influence environmental standards and behaviours across project teams and supply chains.
