As part of Bouygues Construction's Public Works division, VSL International participates in the construction of major technical structures and guarantees their structural safety and durability: transport infrastructure (bridges, tunnels), industrial and energy production structures, and commercial buildings.

VSL's business is based on four areas of expertise:
· Structural systems and technologies
· Civil engineering
· Foundations and soil engineering
· Preservation, structural repairs, renovation and optimization of structures.

VSL has 4,000 employees at 25 locations worldwide (Asia and Oceania, Middle East, Europe, Latin America, Canada).

Project

Sizewell C is at the heart of the UK’s clean energy revolution. This landmark nuclear power station in Suffolk will provide low-carbon electricity for millions of homes and play a vital role in achieving the UK’s net zero targets. Supported by EDF and the UK Government, Sizewell C is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver sustainable energy infrastructure at scale.

Within the VSL Sub-Alliance, we are responsible for a range of specialist ground engineering works, including deep soil mixing, plastic cut-off walls, embankments, and load transfer platforms — all of which form essential enabling works for the main power station.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Lead Welder to support the delivery of high-quality welding operations across VSL’s scope of works at Sizewell C. This role requires extensive experience in welding carbon steel and the ability to lead safe, precise, and compliant welding activities in line with industry standards and project specifications.

As a Lead Welder, you will perform complex welding operations, monitor work quality, advise on scaffold adjustments, and ensure that nuclear safety, health, and environmental standards are rigorously applied.

Main Responsibilities

Welding Operations

  • Carry out manual welding, tack-welding, and assembly of pressure parts, tubes, pipes, plates, supports, and structural works.

  • Perform welding in line with Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).

  • Monitor fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating, warping, shrinkage, or distortion.

  • Set up and operate welding tools, both hand and power, safely and effectively.

  • Conduct visual inspections during welding operations to confirm compliance.

Safety & Compliance

  • Enforce a zero-harm approach, prioritising nuclear safety and site security at all times.

  • Work in line with site safety regulations, method statements, and risk assessments.

  • Promote and apply the STAR strategy: Stop, Think, Act, Review.

  • Ensure correct PPE is worn and tools are used safely, with proper storage and maintenance.

  • Maintain clean and safe working areas, including segregation and disposal of waste.

Coordination & Supervision

  • Support the Welding Supervisor in coordinating activities and advising on scaffolding adjustments.

  • Collaborate with site management and other trades to ensure smooth workflow and compliance with project requirements.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Notify supervisors of any defective materials or equipment issues.

  • Keep accurate records of welding inspections, incidents, and corrective actions.

  • Support preparation for qualification tests and audits.

Candidate Profile

Education & Qualifications

  • Level 2 Apprenticeship or Diploma in Welding (or equivalent qualification).

  • BS EN ISO 9606 Coded Welding Qualification in relevant works (or ability to pass qualification tests).

  • CCNSG Safety Passport (or ability to achieve).

  • CEFR B1 level English (or higher).

  • Ability to achieve baseline security clearance (BPSS).

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in welding on large-scale industrial projects.

  • At least 3 years’ hands-on experience as a welder in a relevant industry.

  • Skilled in TIG, MMA, and combined TIG + MMA processes.

  • Proven ability to weld carbon steel piping to required dimensions and schedules.

  • Experienced in welding in H-L045 position for piping.

  • Strong knowledge of welding codes, specifications, and metal properties (bevels, shrinkage, machining, etc.).

Personal Attributes

  • Safety-conscious with a commitment to nuclear quality standards.

  • Precise and detail-oriented with strong inspection and quality awareness.

  • Able to work effectively in a high-risk, heavily regulated environment.

  • Proactive, reliable, and professional in approach to work.

  • Willing to undertake further training and development as required.
