The Lower Thames Crossing is one of the UK’s most significant infrastructure projects. LTC is a new road that will connect Kent and Essex through a tunnel beneath the River Thames and will be the greenest road ever built in the UK, creating six times more green space than road. The reliable new route will almost double road capacity over the river east of London, reducing congestion and giving millions of people more choice over where they live, work and spend their valuable time.

The Role

We are looking for an experienced Tunnel Package Design Manager to lead the multidisciplinary design of the Lower Thames Crossing Tunnel Package.

This is a senior design leadership role with responsibility for the overall management, coordination and delivery of a complex package encompassing two bored road tunnels, cross passages and associated underground structures, ground improvement and geotechnical works, and the integration of associated M&E and tunnel systems.

Working closely with the client, internal design teams, specialist sub-consultants and the wider design organisation, you will provide leadership across the design process, ensuring that multiple technical disciplines and interfaces are effectively coordinated and that the developing design meets the project's programme, technical and delivery requirements.

The position will be based in Paris, with regular travel to London, typically on a weekly basis.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the multidisciplinary design of the Lower Thames Crossing Tunnel Package;
• Lead the design of the two bored road tunnels, cross passages and associated underground structures;
• Coordinate the design of ground improvement and associated geotechnical works;
• Manage the integration of mechanical, electrical and tunnel systems with the civil and structural design;
• Ensure effective coordination across civil, structural, geotechnical, mechanical, electrical, systems and other specialist disciplines;
• Lead the management of key design interfaces, programme, deliverables, technical reviews and design decisions;
• Directly manage the Paris-based DT design team, providing clear leadership, priorities and technical direction;
• Manage and coordinate specialist sub-consultants and their respective design inputs;
• Work closely with the Arup–Mott design team and other project design partners to ensure effective integration across the wider programme;
• Present the developing design to the client and lead the process required to secure client review, acceptance and sign-off;
• Ensure the design is developed rigorously and consistently in accordance with project requirements, programme and agreed technical standards;
• Identify and manage design risks and ensure appropriate mitigation and resolution of technical issues;
• Provide clear and accurate reporting on design progress, risks, interfaces and key decisions to project leadership and the client; and
• Undertake other reasonable duties appropriate to the role.

Essential Skills & Experience

• Approximately 10–15 years' professional experience, primarily within major infrastructure projects;
• Significant experience in engineering design and/or design management;
• Demonstrable experience leading or coordinating multidisciplinary infrastructure design teams;
• Strong understanding of the interfaces between civil and structural works, geotechnical design, M&E and systems;
• Experience managing complex design packages, including programme, deliverables, interfaces, technical reviews and design decisions;
• Experience working collaboratively with clients, contractors, designers and specialist consultants within complex project environments;
• Strong client-facing capability, with the confidence to present technical designs, recommendations, risks and decisions to senior stakeholders;
• Strong leadership skills with the ability to provide direction to multidisciplinary engineering teams;
• Excellent organisational, communication and stakeholder-management skills;
• Fluent English; and
• A working level of French sufficient to operate effectively within a Paris-based engineering and project environment.

Desirable Experience

• Previous experience on major tunnelling or underground infrastructure projects;
• Experience with bored tunnels and associated underground structures;
• Exposure to major road, rail or transport infrastructure programmes;
• Knowledge of ground improvement and complex geotechnical works;
• Experience coordinating civil and structural design with M&E and tunnel systems; and
• Previous experience working across international or joint-venture project environments.
