Specialized in civil engineering and engineering structures, Bouygues Travaux Publics is one of the world leaders in the fields of land use planning and sustainable infrastructure construction. Bouygues Travaux Publics is committed to diversity and is open to all talents.
The Lower Thames Crossing (LTC) is one of the UK’s most significant infrastructure projects. LTC is a new road that will connect Kent and Essex through a tunnel beneath the River Thames and will be the greenest road ever built in the UK - creating six times more green space than road. The reliable new route will almost double road capacity over the river east of London to reduce congestion and give millions of people more choice on where they live, work and spend their valuable time.
We have a diverse programme team on LTC that reflects the communities we work in and fosters an inclusive culture by actively supporting the programme's Purpose, Principles and Cultural Pillars and growing employee networks.
TBM Methods Manager
We are seeking an experienced TBM Methods Manager/ Deputy Methods Manager to play a leading role on a major tunnelling project involving the launch, operation, turnaround and retrieval of a 16.40m diameter slurry Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), one of the largest machines of its kind ever deployed in Europe.
This is a rare opportunity to take ownership of the construction methodologies for a complex TBM operation, including shaft launch, underground operation, a major portal U-turn and final extraction. Working closely with production, plant, temporary works and specialist subcontractor teams, you will help deliver a landmark infrastructure project from concept through to construction.
The Opportunity
Reporting technically to the Methods Manager, you will take responsibility for developing and coordinating the construction methods required throughout the TBM lifecycle.
You will lead the production of detailed construction methodologies and "for construction" drawings, ensuring safe, practical and efficient delivery of key project milestones. You will work directly with project delivery teams and collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders including TBM specialists, lifting and transport contractors, temporary works designers and production teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development of methodologies for TBM assembly, launch, operation, turnaround and retrieval.
- Produce and coordinate detailed construction-stage engineering drawings and method statements.
- Develop construction sequences and site installation layouts.
- Manage temporary works requirements associated with TBM operations.
- Coordinate interfaces between production, plant, logistics and engineering teams.
- Engage with specialist suppliers, contractors and equipment manufacturers.
- Provide technical support during construction and adapt methodologies as site conditions evolve.
- Lead and develop a small methods team, including engineers and CAD technicians.
- Actively participate in technical workshops, design reviews and stakeholder meetings.
Key Project Points
The successful candidate will contribute to several major engineering milestones, including:
- Assembly and launch of a 16.40m slurry TBM within a shaft environment.
- Development and execution of a major TBM U-turn operation within a portal.
- Safe retrieval and extraction of the machine at project completion.
- Design and coordination of associated logistics, utility connections, slurry systems, lifting operations and temporary works.
About You
You will be an experienced tunnelling professional with a strong track record in TBM delivery and construction methodology development.
Requirements
- Extensive experience in TBM tunnelling projects.
- Proven experience of TBM assembly, launch and retrieval operations.
- Strong understanding of construction methodology development and sequencing.
- Experience producing or coordinating detailed construction-stage engineering drawings.
- Knowledge of temporary works design and management.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office.
- Ability to work independently while coordinating multidisciplinary teams.
